When a hurricane or storm hits an area, the next thought
by the response team is to introduce a relief strategy.
So as technology evolves, it is little wonder why the use
of drones is now being used to help with pre planning weather reports, which
will allow experts to determine a storm or hurricane’s severity, but it can
also help with the rescue mission.
Predicting extreme weather
Drone capabilities help experts to predict extreme
weather conditions more accurately, showing weather patterns to determine when
a natural catastrophe will occur.
Rescue operations
The time it takes to operate a rescue mission is cut
drastically using drones and one example of this is the Chennai flooding.
Drones were reportedly used as part of a communication
system which enabled the nearest rescue teams to directly attend the location. Drone
pilots in Louisiana, during the time of the flood, spent time flying over
streets and neighbourhoods helping those missing family and friends, to know
that they were safe.
And for insurance purposes, drones can also be a valuable
tool when trying to document the extent of damage to properties and the
surrounding areas with aerial images. And with the use of ‘thermography
and photogrammetry’, construction engineers can identify exactly where
structures sustained damage.’
According to a number of reports, following earthquakes
in Nepal, DJI and mapping company Pix4D worked together to create 3D maps of
torn apart landscapes. This type of map help with rebuilding the infrastructure
of damaged areas, including roads and bridges.
