Risks of using unlicensed commercial drone pilots

There is an old saying, you buy cheap, you buy twice.

And even though it may be slightly costly to hire a drone pilot to capture footage that will take your breath away, the pros far outweigh the cons as a drone is not a toy.

When a drone pilot is registered and has a licence with the Civil Aviation Authority, this ensures that a pilot has an understanding of flying practices and flight height requirements.

Liabilities of hiring an unlicensed Drone Pilot

  • Fines

A Drone Pilot will get a fine for operating a drone without a licence but you, as the person hiring an unlicensed drone pilot will also face a penalty.

But fear not, if you hire a drone pilot, who is registered they will be insured, which will in turn removes your liability.

  • Damage Liability

If, in the unfortunate circumstance that your drone pilot causes property damage, you could be held liable for any damage or injury if they are not licenced. But, licenced drone pilots have liability insurance which covers unexpected events.

  • Privacy Rights Violation

A licenced drone pilot will know what to record and what to take pictures of to not breach UK privacy laws. That is not to say that an unlicensed drone pilot will have no clue, but if caught and reprimanded, you as the person hiring will be liable and face a penalty.
